Scaling & Root Planing

Dental Services by Michael J. Spitzer, DDS

About Scaling & Root Planing

Some cases of acute periodontal (gum) disease that do not respond to more conventional treatment and self-care such as flossing may require a special kind of cleaning called scaling and root planing. During a dental exam and cleaning, Dr. Spitzer may find the beginning stages of gum disease and recommend a deeper cleaning. Scaling and root planing is an important part of periodontal treatment that removes plaque and tartar to improve oral health and treat gingivitis, or the early stages of gum disease. The two procedures are usually performed during the same appointment as part of a deep dental cleaning to treat gum disease.  Scaling and root planing are considered the “gold standard” treatment for gum disease.

Dental scaling removes plaque and tartar from the surfaces of teeth above and below the gum line. Root planing smoothes the tooth root and helps the gums reattach to the tooth. This treatment can help sore and bleeding gums, prevent tooth loss and give you the best chance for long-lasting oral health.

The Scaling & Root Planing Process

The procedure begins with administration of a local anesthetic to reduce any discomfort. Then, a small instrument called a "scaler," or an ultrasonic cleaner, is used to clean beneath your gum line to remove plaque and tartar.

The root surfaces on the tooth are then planed and smoothed. If effective, scaling and root planing helps the gums reattach themselves to the tooth structure.  Additional measures may be needed if the periodontal pockets persist after scaling and root planing.

When is scaling & root planing recommended?

Persistent Bad Breath

If you are experiencing bad breath that will not go away with
regular brushing and flossing, you may be experiencing a symptom of gum disease.

Heavy Tartar Buildup

When plaque becomes hardened over time, it becomes tartar and can only be removed by a dental professional.

Deep Pockets

Tooth pockets are gaps that form between the gums and the roots of teeth, in a healthy mouth the gums form a tight seal around the teeth, but gum disease can cause the gums to separate and create pockets.
